Sony VR
Redesign

About

I redesigned the packaging for Sony's virtual reality headset, and designed motion graphic advertisements to promote the product. I sought to modernize the design, and help it rise to the level of its competition. I wanted to market the product as more of a luxury item, a contrast to Sony's current design, which looks relatively cheap and uninspiring.

Packaging

For the product packaging, I maintained a simple, rectangular outer package in order to make shipping the product in large quantities easier. However, inside the outer package, I deviated from Sony. Inside the package, I opted to encase the headset, and everything else that comes with it, inside of a carrying case. This provides a better experience for the consumer.

Package Design

For the design of the outer packaging, I sought to elevate Sony's design by making it feel more luxurious and modern. I researched Sony's VR competitors to see what their packaging designs looked like, ensuring that my design would stand out on the shelves. The layout is far more minimalist than Sony's current design, emphasizing its status as a luxury item. I utilized a color palette of dark blues, offset by pops of magenta and teal colors, as well as the white text. This makes the product feel more upscale, and draws the eye to the focal points. The text pairing of Vortice and Poppins is clean, bold, and modern, and perhaps even a little futuristic, emphasizing the technological advancement that VR is.

Motion Graphic Advertisements

Following the completion of the product packaging, I moved on to designing a pair of motion graphic advertisements in Adobe After Effects. The first of these ads is meant for use on a website, potentially a tech-focused website, in order to influence readers to click on the call-to-action to learn more about the product, or purchase it. The movement is controlled, not chaotic, and draws the reader's eye. The second ad is intended as a YouTube ad, which would play before a video. It showcases the product, as well as the packaging, enticing the viewer to click on the call-to-action.
